Port of Riga sees surge in container traffic due to Russia-Ukraine conflict
The Port of Riga has seen a significant increase in container volume in 2022, recording a throughput of 460,700 TEU, which is 16% higher than the previous year. This can be attributed to the impact of the Ukraine-Russia conflict on global logistics chains, resulting in a shift of cargo movement in the Baltic region and worldwide. BCT transshipped 326,000 TEU, and six regular container shipping lines renewed their contracts for 2023. The Port of Riga invested €19.8 million ($22.4 million) in early 2022 to improve port infrastructure. Other Baltic ports, such as Klaipėda, Tallinn, Helsinki, and HaminaKotka, also experienced increased container cargo turnover, while the Port of St. Petersburg lost 64% of its container cargo volume due to the conflict.
