Chittagong Port Authority Allows Larger Vessels to Berth in Order to Reduce Import Costs
The Chittagong Port Authority has issued a circular allowing ships with a maximum length of 200 metres and a draught of 10 metres to berth at its jetties. A study conducted by a London-based consultancy firm discovered that the port’s navigation capacity could support larger ships, prompting the decision to accommodate larger vessels. The move is expected to reduce port congestion and lower import costs because larger vessels can carry more cargo. The decision has been welcomed by the Bangladesh Shipping Agents Association, and foreign shipping companies are expected to deploy larger ships on the Chittagong route.
