Major ocean carrier stops charging container fees on US marine terminal closure days

MSC, like Maersk and HMM, will stop charging container detention and demurrage fees on days when US marine terminals are closed. The world’s largest container line said it is collaborating with the US Federal Maritime Commission on industry “best practises and requirements.” The Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 2022 requires the FMC to issue final rules on detention and demurrage billing by mid-June. Matthew Leech, President and CEO of Ports America, argued that marine terminals are not intended to be used as warehouses.
